About the museum

The Radimlja Stećak Necropolis is one of the most recognizable symbols of the cultural and historical heritage of Herzegovina. It is located at Vidovo Polje, near the village of Poprati, about 3 kilometres west of Stolac. Due to its exceptional preservation, accessibility and richly decorated monuments, Radimlja is considered one of the most important stećak sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

The necropolis contains 135 stećak tombstones, 63 of which are decorated. Its special value lies in the variety of monument shapes, rich stone reliefs, carved decorations and inscriptions that reflect medieval life, beliefs and artistic expression in this region. Common motifs include stylized crosses, grapevines, human and animal figures, hunting scenes, weapons and architectural ornaments.

The best-known motif from Radimlja is the male figure with a raised hand and a large, clearly emphasized palm. This image has become a recognizable symbol of the necropolis and is often interpreted as a sign of greeting, openness and hospitality. For visitors, it represents a powerful and memorable connection with the spirit of Herzegovina and its medieval heritage.

Radimlja was declared a National Monument of Bosnia and Herzegovina in 2002. Since 2016, it has been included on the UNESCO World Heritage List as part of the serial nomination of medieval stećak tombstone graveyards. This recognition confirms its outstanding universal value, not only for Stolac and Herzegovina, but also for the wider cultural heritage of Bosnia and Herzegovina and the region.

The Public Institution “Radimlja” Stolac is responsible for tourism development, promotion of local values, and the protection of the cultural, historical and natural heritage of Stolac. Through its activities, the institution connects the most important tourism potentials of the area, promotes local traditions, customs and cultural heritage, and contributes to creating a recognizable tourism identity for Stolac.

A visit to Radimlja is ideal for travellers who want to experience authentic Herzegovina, discover medieval art and explore one of the most important cultural sites in the country. Thanks to its location, Radimlja can easily be combined with a visit to Stolac, the old town of Vidoški, the Bregava River, traditional mills and other natural and cultural attractions in the area.
