About the museum

The Konjic Heritage Museum tells the story of a town shaped by centuries of culture, craftsmanship, trade routes and everyday life along the Neretva River. Situated in the historic centre of Konjic, close to the famous Old Bridge, the museum is a perfect starting point for visitors who want to experience the city beyond its beautiful scenery and discover the deeper identity of this part of Herzegovina.

Although the idea of establishing a museum in Konjic dates back to the 1970s, the Konjic Heritage Museum was officially founded in 2011. Its mission is to preserve, research and present the cultural, historical and natural heritage of the Konjic region. Today, the museum plays an important role not only in protecting local heritage, but also in promoting Konjic as a meaningful cultural and tourist destination.

The permanent exhibition includes an ethnographic collection, an archaeological collection, a gallery space, a library and the birth house of Zulfikar Zuko Džumhur. The ethnographic collection is especially attractive for visitors because it presents traditional life, household objects, old crafts and customs of the local population, particularly from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Through these exhibits, tourists can better understand how people in this region lived, worked and expressed their creativity.

The archaeological collection highlights the long continuity of life in the Konjic area. Exhibits and replicas from ancient and medieval periods show that this region has been inhabited for thousands of years and has always been connected to wider historical movements. For visitors interested in history, archaeology and medieval Bosnia, this part of the museum offers a valuable insight into the deeper past of the area.

The museum also preserves the artistic and literary spirit of Konjic. Its gallery space hosts thematic exhibitions, cultural events, presentations and various public programmes, while the library keeps works by local authors. This makes the museum more than a place of memory — it is also a living cultural space where heritage continues to be shared and interpreted.

A special part of the museum is the birth house of Zulfikar Zuko Džumhur, the famous travel writer, painter and caricaturist. This museum branch brings visitors closer to the life and work of a remarkable artist who carried the spirit of Konjic with him while travelling and writing about the wider world. For tourists, Zuko’s house offers a personal, warm and authentic connection with the cultural soul of the town.

A visit to the Konjic Heritage Museum is ideal for anyone who wants to experience Konjic in a deeper and more meaningful way. The museum brings together history, tradition, crafts, art and local stories, making it an essential stop for tourists, students, researchers, culture lovers and all visitors who want to understand the true character of Konjic.
